Depression makes a terrible third party in a relationship.
When your partner is living with the effects of Depression, you are living with the effects of Depression!
The Depression may be robbing your relationship of shared pleasures, of optimism, of time with other people.
If Depression pulls your partner into actions like:
- missing or neglecting work
- skipping social engagements
- mis-use of drugs or alcohol
- self harm or self-depricating talk
then you are probable affected, too.
If your partner is living with Depression you probably start out wanting to be helpful. But if your help seems to have no impact you may experience Frustration, Impatience, or Withdrawal.
If you are feeling like the Depression is affecting your relationship, you may want to look for outside support. When you have the support you need, your partner will also benefit.
You might decide to share our conversations, or at some point, your partner may join you.
There are so many ways to prevent Depression from separating the two of you! It is possible to work as a team, to put Depression in a place that is managable, and to rediscover the life the two of you planned to have.
Call me if you would like to discuss these options, and whether they are right for you.
